BBG blooms in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world. Each year more than 750,000 people visit the well-manicured formal and informal gardens that are a testament to nature's vitality amidst urban brick and concrete. More than 12,000 kinds of plants from around the globe are displayed on 52 acres and in the acclaimed Steinhardt Conservatory. There's always something new to see. BBG boasts many firsts and one-of-a-kinds, including the first Fragrance Garden, the distinguished Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, the C. V. Starr Bonsai Museum, the unique Plant Family Collection and the Trail of Evolution, which traces the development of the natural world over 3-1/2 billion years. Among its many formal attractions are the Cherry Esplanade, the Osborne Garden (framed by pergolas dripping with Wisteria), a Shakespearean 'Knot Garden' and the intensely sensual Fragrance Garden (the first such garden in the United States to be designed specifically for the visually impaired) and the amazing Japanese style Hill and Pond Garden which features Shinto shrines and a traditional teahouse. The horticultural displays dovetail with education and research -- together these three constitute the Garden's mission. BBG's Children's Garden program, the first ever in a botanic garden, has been the model for similar programs around the globe. Scientific research at the Garden includes a major commitment to cataloging the plant diversity in all counties within 50 miles of New York City -- one of the largest metropolitan areas on Earth.
