| Based largely on investment banker George Gustav Heye's collection of Native American artefacts, the museum's exhibits range from prehitoric stone carvings to modern works of art. The museum's policy one of great respect to the cultures it represents, and is greatly enhanced by the expert knowledge of its Native American curators. Beyond the permanent
exhibits, the museum offers a variety of temporary exhibitions, together
with presentations of music, dance, interpretive theatre and As manager of the museum's moving image and sound archives, the Film and Video Center houses over 1500 titles on film and videotape. Since 1979, it has presented 10 major festivals in New York City and it continues to co-ordinate the biennial Native American Film and Video Festival. The Center presents daily public screenings and special lectures, and produces authoritative publications on all aspects of Native American life and culture on film, video and audio tape.
