The ship was decommissioned in 1974, but it still resounds with historic atmosphere, reinforced by its tour guides, many of whom are ex-servicemen. Its exciting permanent exhibits feature a guided missile submarine - the Growler, and an A-12 Blackbird - the world's fastest spy plane. More recent additions include a number of Iraqi tanks captured during the Gulf War. 'floating' museum is located on the Hudson River waterfront and is
housed in an heroic World War II and Vietnam War veteran, the aircraft
carrier Intrepid. 
The
ship carries a number of changing exhibitions, which cover aspects
of aviation, military, marine and space exploration history.
